Modern Rules Of DIY Kitchen Decor.

The kitchen is often an integral part of your home but it is not frequently considered when you think of decorating a space. As the place where you spend time making nourishing meals, baking, or even just socializing with friends, your kitchen should have some personality.

It can often be expensive to spruce up your kitchen without breaking the bank. Here are some things to consider when designing the kitchen space with a DIY eye.

DIY Wood Planks

If you have a spare wooden plank lying about along with a drill, this one is for you.

Sand the plank down so it doesn’t have any rough edges. You can use a layer of primer or just lay down some acrylic white paint as a base coat.

Use the drill to make two holes in the centre of the plank towards the edges on either side. You can loop a length of yarn through the holes. Use knots to secure the rope.

Paint your favorite quote, your family name or even a small scene from your favorite book or movie. Your plank is now ready for display.

If you want a functional element to the plank, then drill holes to add hooks to the bottom of the plank. You’ll have a cute and personalized hanger!

Kitchen Wall Art and Wall Hanging

You can make a cute wall hanging for your kitchen by grabbing a cardboard square and a glue gun and a ball of cotton rope. Foam sheets, penknife, and a plastic fork and knife can help.

Glue the end of the cotton rope to the cardboard. Wrap the rope in a circular manner around the glue. You can also add hot glue to hold the rope in place. In addition, you can buy a kitchen inspired wall art at ElephantStock to update the walls in a style.

You can glue the edges down to provide a polished finish. You can add a plastic fork and knife to the wall hanging using glue.

Cut the foam into patterns like flowers or hearts or even cute spice bottles. Add these details to your wall hanging for that extra pop of color.

You can forego all this trouble in favor of a simple canvas photo print as wall art

Floating Shelf Kitchen Ideas

The kitchen is the perfect place to add floating shelves. They can serve as a spice display. They can hold expensive appliances and save you valuable counter space. They can hold family photos.

Ideally aim to have a shelf size with a depth of 10-12 inches for the best results. You can also add bracket supports to make sure your shelf don’t droop in the middle

Popsicle Stick Craft Ideas

Another fun way to add a DIY spirit to your kitchen is using a popsicle stick. You also need a few colorful foam sheets for this project.

Arrange the popsicle sticks into a display board. You can use one or two sticks to reinforce the display by sticking them horizontally in the back. Do this at the top and bottom of the arrangement.

You can now proceed to the fun part. Cut up squares of the foam in different colors to add to the display.

If you’re thinking of lettering then, white foam on a colored background will be the best option. Superglue the foam squares to the popsicle board for a fun display idea. Cut out letters in white foam and stick them on the colored squares for the best results.

DIY Fridge Magnets

One way to add some life and color into your kitchen is by making your own kitchen magnets.

For this, you will need abandoned metal lids. Decoupage sheets of your favorite designs. White acrylic paint and paint in your favorite colors, Modge Podge, superglue and small magnets.

You need to add a layer of white acrylic paint to the lid so your chosen color can pop against the lid. Add the base color in keeping with your chosen decoupage design.

You can cut out the decoupage design and stick it to the metal lid. Add a layer of modge podge to seal the design in. You can add detailing on your lid like polka dots, hearts or even stickers. Seal with a second layer of modge podge. Superglue the magnet to the back and your own personal fridge magnet is ready!

You can play off the themes of the holiday season by adding snowmen, Santa or reindeer to make your magnet that much more special.

DIY Clay Coasters

For this, you will need clay that you can bake, a baking tray lined with parchment paper and a circular cookie cutter. You can choose the bonus paint colors. Grab a clay sealant or modge podge to help your clay settle.

Roll out the clay to a quarter-inch thickness and use the cookie cutter to make multiple moulds of the clay.

Line them on the baking tray. For baking, follow the instructions on the clay packaging.

Once baked, allow them to cool before sanding down the edges. You can also secure the bottom so it doesn’t scratch your table.

Paint them according to your preferences and voila! Your DIY Coasters are ready.
